Wellington Water implemented smart leak detection cables throughout its water network to address significant water loss challenges across the region's aging infrastructure.[4] This technology enables rapid identification and repair of leaks in a drinking water network comprising 2,543km of pipeline, much of which is 30-100 years old.[1] The approach forms part of a broader smart water monitoring solution designed to cover multiple parameters within the water distribution system.[4]

Technical Components

In Brooklyn, water leakage was reduced by 51,000 litres per day, benefiting 533 homes.[2] Johnsonville experienced a reduction of 58,000 litres per day, benefiting 766 homes.[2] Melrose saw water leakage reduced by 6,000 litres per day, benefiting 242 homes.[2] Latest annual water loss estimates show that the average level of water loss dropped from 41% to 37% across the 2024/25 financial year, which includes both public and private leaks.[1]
