AI Intensity
Where can AI enhance deployed climate resilience solutions?
Deployed Adaptation Solutions Are Underpowered
Tech is already at work in urban adaptation and resilience solutions to amplify impacts and reduce costs. But most of these solutions were deployed before rapid, recent advances in AI. To quantify this gap, we developed a custom scorecard and deployed an LLM to assess the AI intensity of 216 solutions deployed in 72 cities worldwide.
The results are clear. The majority of deployed climate adaptation solutions—even those already making good use of tech—aren't yet taking advantage of AI.
AI Intensity Scoring Methodology
Each solution was evaluated on a 0-100 scale across four dimensions of AI intensity:
How central is AI/ML to the solution's core functionality?
Sophistication of data handling from sensors to big data analytics.
Level of automated decision-making from basic alerts to autonomous control.
Technical complexity from rule-based systems to deep learning.
How Much Are Existing Solutions Using AI?
90.7% of solutions score below 55 on our AI intensity scale, indicating significant room for enhancement. Only a small fraction demonstrate advanced AI integration today.
