Featured Hazards
Flash/surface flood
Flash floods and surface floods occur when rainfall exceeds the ground's ability to absorb water or when drainage systems become overwhelmed, creating rapidly rising water that can sweep away vehicles, people, and debris. These floods develop quickly with little warning, making them particularly dangerous as people may be caught unprepared in low-lying areas, vehicles, or buildings. Glacial lake outburst floods are especially catastrophic events where natural dams containing glacial meltwater suddenly fail, releasing massive volumes of water that can devastate everything downstream.
Heat wave
Heat waves are prolonged periods of excessively hot weather that can cause widespread health emergencies, particularly affecting elderly people, children, and those with chronic health conditions. These events strain electrical grids as air conditioning demand soars, potentially leading to blackouts that further endanger public health during critical periods. Heat waves can also buckle roads, warp railway tracks, and reduce the efficiency of transportation systems while increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and death.
